Bijagual is a small town in the mountains east of Jacó, and the way up to its waterfall is on horseback. You reach the swimming pools first — that is where you get in — then hike about twenty-five minutes each way down to a lookout over the falls.

The whole thing takes about four hours. The hike is the part that asks something of you; skip it and the pools are still the point. Bring swimwear. If you are driving yourself we will send directions; if not, there is a package with round-trip transport and a Costa Rican lunch.
